I’ve been able to support myself and my family because of the education I was fortunate enough to receive. As an educator, I’ve seen the difference a quality education can make in a child’s life. Nelson Mandela said that “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” We need to give all of our children access to the power of high-quality education. Universal Pre-K is a must as we seek to use public education as a means of advancing equality and leveling the playing field. We also need to invest in our schools, spending more per student, and pay our teachers what they deserve to ensure that we’re not hurt by a devastating teacher turnover rate. In too many ways, our schools are still separate and still unequal. In too many ways, our education system exacerbates existing inequalities in our society instead of helping us overcome them. By expanding the scope of public education and aggressively seeking to integrate our schools we can transform education in America. My commitment to North Carolina is that I will work to ensure we expand the American promise of free education from K-12 to Pre-K through college. When we implement this vision, we will lead the world in education.
